Servo Motors in Aerospace: A Critical Component-Structural and Thermal Challenges in Reusable Rocket Systems

The rise of reusable rockets, driven by companies like SpaceX, has introduced new mechanical and thermal challenges for servo motors. These components control gimbaled engines and aerodynamic fins and must survive extreme conditions during launch and re-entry. Reusable rockets experience high G-forces, vibrations, intense heat, and dust. GXServo has developed a hardened version featuring titanium alloy gears and silicon carbide bearings, with a peak torque of 55 kgf·cm—well above standard servo ratings.

With IP67 protection, GXServo resists corrosion from saltwater (during sea launches) and dust (during land recoveries). These features earned it selection in several national re-entry testing programs.

The servo’s internal self-diagnostic and safety mechanisms perform mechanical checks and angle calibration on startup. In one vertical landing trial, a GXServo unit successfully locked out after detecting an abnormal signal—preventing tail fin misalignment and saving millions in potential losses.

GXServo proves itself across four key domains: structural integrity, thermal stability, electronic protection, and environmental shielding. As such, it’s become a core component supporting China’s development of reusable launch vehicles.
